Create charts in Google Sheets with ease

A chart truly is worth a thousand numbers! In this post, we’ll explore how to create and customise charts in Google Sheets to transform raw data into compelling visuals.

How to create a chart in Google Sheets

To create a chart, start by selecting the data you want to visualise, then click the Insert Chart icon on the toolbar.

Google Sheets generates a default chart based on your selection. You can reposition the chart by dragging it or resize it by adjusting the blue handles.

If you want the chart on its own sheet, click the three-dot menu on the chart and select Move to own sheet. This creates a dedicated sheet, perfect for detailed analysis.

Chart Editor: Setup

The Chart Editor appears as a sidebar and is divided into two tabs: Setup and Customise. In the Setup tab, you control the type of chart and the data it represents.

Chart Types

Google Sheets suggests chart types based on your data. For example, a line chart works well for tracking trends over time, while a pie chart is great for proportions. If the default type doesn’t suit your needs, click the dropdown under Chart Type to explore other options like bar charts, scatter plots, or maps.

Data Range, X-Axis and Series

The data range shows the dataset included in the chart. To modify this, click the grid icon and adjust your selection.

The X-axis typically contains categories like months, while the series represents the data, such as sales figures. You can adjust these by clicking the X-axis or Series dropdown menus.

Chart Editor: Customise

The Customise tab helps you refine the appearance of your chart, ensuring it’s clear and professional.

Chart Style

Customise the chart’s background and borders to match your theme. For example, you can use a light grey background for contrast. The Maximise option enlarges the chart area, and the 3D effect adds depth.

Chart and Axis Titles

Add a title to your chart for context. You can also include subtitles or axis titles. Adjust the font size, style, and colour to match your presentation style.

Series

The Series section lets you format the series of data. It also lets you tailor specific data points in your chart. For example, you can change the colour of a line or bar to highlight trends. Enable Data Labels to show exact values directly on the chart, and adjust their font size, style, and position for better visibility.

Legend

You can format with a new font or text colour and move the legend to different positions (top, bottom, left, or right).

Axes

The horizontal and vertical axes can be formatted.

Gridlines

Gridlines make your chart easier to read by providing reference points for data. You can customise both major and minor gridlines for the horizontal and vertical axes. You can also change their spacing, colour, and line style to suit your chart’s design and purpose.

Customising charts in Google Sheets is straightforward yet powerful. With tools like the Chart Editor, you can transform your data into visually engaging stories.
