Enhance your Google Sheets: Cell Formatting

Cell formatting in Google Sheets is a simple but powerful way to make your data more readable and visually appealing. By customizing how your information looks, you can make patterns and insights stand out. Let’s dive into some key formatting techniques!

For a detailed, step-by-step guide on how to apply these formatting techniques, check out this video:

I’ll walk you through each option, showing how to transform your Google Sheets with these simple but powerful tools!

Cell Borders

Borders allow you to define sections of your data clearly.

Adding Borders: Select the cells you want to apply borders to. You can choose different border styles (top, bottom, left, right, or all borders).

Customizing Borders: You can adjust the border colour and thickness to suit your needs.

Borders are perfect for organizing your data and making certain sections more readable.

Cell Fill Colour

To highlight or differentiate parts of your data, use cell fill colour.

Applying Colour: Select your cells, click the fill colour icon in the toolbar, and choose a background colour.

Using Colours for Patterns: Cell shading can help you spot patterns or key figures at a glance. For example, you might want to highlight high-performing data in green or flag issues in red.

Cell Alignment

Proper alignment ensures your data looks clean and is easy to read. By default, text is aligned to the left of the cell and numbers are aligned to the right.

Horizontal Alignment: You can align text or numbers to the left, center, or right within the cell.

Vertical Alignment: Adjust the vertical alignment to top, middle, or bottom, especially useful for cells with multiple lines of text.

Correct alignment makes the sheet more visually organized.

Cell Font and Font Size

Everyone uses the bog-standard Arial! Be original and change the font! Customizing the font style helps important data stand out.

Changing Font Style: You can select from a variety of fonts in Google Sheets to match the tone of your data.

Bold, Italic, Underline: These options can be applied to emphasize specific data points. For example, you might bold the headers of your table.

Adjusting font size helps you maintain hierarchy in your data.

Resizing Text: Increase font size for titles or headers and reduce it for the main body of data. Using different font sizes helps make your sheet easier to navigate, especially when you have lots of data.

Text Wrap

If you have long text entries, text wrap ensures that all the information is visible.

Enabling Text Wrap: Select your cell(s) and click the text wrap icon in the toolbar. This allows text to display across multiple lines instead of being cut off or spilling over into adjacent cells.

Text wrap keeps your data organized and prevents information from being hidden.

Text Rotation

Sometimes, rotating text can save space or make headers more readable.

Rotating Text: Select the text rotation icon and choose your desired angle. You can rotate text vertically or diagonally, which is especially helpful in compact tables.
